On the 24th, six entertainment companies; SM, YG, JYP, StarJ, AM, and KEYEAST; came together to celebrate their collaboration in forming UAM (United Asia Management).
Below the cut, I will be mentioning some of the stars that each entertainment company (listed above) has signed to show why that company is one of the privileged six to be on this list.
SM, YG, and JYP Entertainment are known as the “Big 3” in South Korea because they are the three biggest music entertainment companies. (While each has its share of actors, they are all known predominantly for their singers.)
SM Entertainment, the biggest music entertainment company in Korea, was once home to top-selling groups H.O.T., Fly to the Sky, S.E.S., and Shinhwa (of old school K-pop). It currently holds artists BoA, TVXQ, TRAX, f(x), Girls’ Generation (SNSD), SHINee, Super Junior, and CSJH The Grace. It also holds actors Kim Minjong (Athena: Goddess of War) and Lee Yeonhee (Paradise Ranch, East of Eden).
Big Bang, 2NE1, Gummy, Se7en, Jinusean, and 1TYM are just some of the stars that belong in YG Entertainment. Founder Yang Hyunsuk was once a part of legendary boy group Seo Taiji and Boys. It is generally known for R&B and hip-hop. Big Mama, Wheesung, and Park Hanbyul (Oh My Lady) are some of the celebrities who were formerly signed with YG Entertainment.
Former stars under JYP Entertainment include Rain (singer and actor well-known throughout Asia), god (million-seller group), Byul, Jay Park (ex-2PM member), and Noel. Notable singers currently signed with JYP Entertainment include Wonder Girls, 2PM, 2AM, miss A, San E, JOO, and J. Lim. JYP Entertainment has an office in New York, and the Wonder Girls are currently targeting the American music market. JYP Entertainment is also home to a few actors, none of which are very notable or popular at this point.
According to Wikipedia, Soo Ae (Athena: Goddess of War), Kim Namgil, Lee Soyeon (Super Rookie, Temptation of an Angel), Kim Hyungyun, Shin Kihyun (Take Care of the Young Lady), and Lee Sanghong are the only celebrities under StarJ Entertainment. Former stars include Won Bin, Jang Donggun, Lee Nayoung, and Go Soyoung. According to its Daum Cafe, aside from the celebrities already mentioned, StarJ Entertainment is home to actors Jo Hyunjae (49 Days, 3 Dads 1 Mom), Han Chaeyoung (Boys Over Flowers, Delightful Girl Choon Hyang), Choi Kanghee, Lee Jungjin (9 End 2 Outs, Love Story in Harvard), Lee Jin, and Marco (We Got Married Season 1).
The only celebrities I could find from AM Entertainment are Jang Donggun, Hyun Bin, Shin Minah, Song Jaerim. And if that list seems awfully small, that’s because it is. However, the stars it has are pretty powerful on their own. Think of Hyun Bin, lead of hit dramas, My Name is Kim Sam Soon and Secret Garden. To many, he’s considered a high profile actor. But when placed next to Jang Donggun, Hyun Bin is just considered his apprentice. That’s right. So that means that if Jang Donggun is an A-lister, Hyun Bin is a (B-)-lister. Shin Minah (My Girlfriend is a Nine-Tailed Fox, Naked Kitchen) and Song Jaerim (After School’s Because of You MV, 2NE1’s Go Away MV) are more low-profile actors; both are in their later 20s, but are starting to have followings of their own.
KEYEAST Entertainment was started by famous Hallyu star Bae Yongjoon (Winter Sonata). Lee Jiah (Beethoven Virus, Athena: Goddess of War), Kim Soohyun (Dream High, Giant), Kim Minseo (Baby-faced Beauty), Park Jibin (Stars Falling from the Sky, Boys Over Flowers), and Ryu Sangwook (Creating Destiny, Taeyang’s Wedding Dress MV) are some of the actors signed with the company. In addition, singers-turned-actors Kim Hyunjoong (SS501) and Hwanhee (Fly to the Sky) are also under KEYEAST.
I’m looking forward to more collaborations in the future between these 6 companies. Hopefully they’ll be able to utilize their skills to the fullest potential, bringing Korean entertainment to a whole other level.
